What Makes a Good Team? Good team members!

Here are a few recommended exercises to get to know your team mates and create common ground:

1. Create a physical exercise goal(s). This exercise not only benefits the team members individually but also cuts down on health insurance costs! Form teams based on interest in a particular physical activity – running for example – once they know the runners in the organization it is easier to plan events and perhaps do competitions together. These are fantastic team-building exercises and physical exercise is a fantastic stress reducer and attention builder – as long as they don’t get injured!

2. Pick a charity. Pick one organization you are going to donate too on an annual basis and hopefully they have volunteer opportunities for your staff. Focusing your time and effort onto one organization creates a lot of good will and energy if the charity is agreed to by your workers. Do not mandate an organization if there is not enough ownership of the task – there may be one you just need to attend to personally, make sure the one you think for the organization has a ton of support.

3. Baby Pictures. Ask everyone to bring in a baby picture and have a contest to determine who can correctly identify the most pictures. This is a great time to share stories and create a memory wall. See next exercise.

4. Memory Wall. This exercise works well with the baby pictures and can be combined. Share stories and pictures about events from work that changed you. Memorialize all of the memories either physically or digitally and allow additions throughout the year. Don’t leave anyone out! If there are a lot of memories you can create a yearbook and publish them annually. A great reminder of the year’s success and it will allow everyone to feel part of the team.
